The Deep Six is a rock band of Christchurch New Zealand, established in 2011.
Following a counselling session, drummer Hurb Gill drove to his nearest friend (Shane Suede) with the intention of forming a band. Shane gave Hurb the details of guitarist Ryan Franicevic. By chance Ryan met bass player Koko Lassi a few days later. Hurb was given the details of Auckland guitarist Scott Daley who had recently moved to Christchurch. The quartet jammed for the first time in September of 2011. They tried a few vocalists until Ben Brootal completed the line up. The group performed under the name Lockjaw from May 2012 until June 2013. Shane Suede replaced Franicevic as guitarist and the name Lockjaw was later retired for a number of personal and professional reasons. The Deep Six made their first live appearance on January 3rd 2014.
The band describe their music as “A tension or clash resulting from the combination of two or more disharmonious or unsuitable elements.” This is the definition of ‘dissonance’ taken from a dictionary found in their old rehearsal space. This description is most apparent on the song ‘Dissonance H’ The Deep Six live show is something to behold. The band typically spend the day after tending to their injuries.
