Von Voin Strum are fast tracking their way to rock‘n roll stardom, with their own enigmatic blend of high octane rock, and blues infused melodies. The band has worked tirelessly over the past few years to refine their craft, and have become renowned for their energetic and captivating live shows.

The band’s debut record “Shiver Roses” released in May 2012 gained strong media attention with the singles “Shiver Roses” and “Power & Filth” earning airtime on both The Rock and Radio Hauraki, and C4 music here in N.Z. This record is still currently available through via Google Play, iTunes and at select record stores.

Von Voin Strum have been busy playing shows up and down the country, and already have two international supports under their belts having opened for Australian rock legends INXS at the ITM V8 super cars event in Hamilton, and sharing the stage with rock icon and ex-Guns N Roses guitarist Slash at CBS Arena in Christchurch.

Their new single “Take Me Home” recently recorded at Revolver Studios, is now set to throttle the airwaves. The video for the song is directed by legendary Christchurch ex-pat Marc Swadel, whose credits include, The Stone Roses, Chemical Brothers, Liam Finn, & Die Die Die. “Hard edged rock and blues anthems with intricate chops, hook laden riffs, and great use of dynamics – Shiver Roses is an impressive preview of things to come from Von Voin Strum.” – The Star

Mari Slack

Pop meets rock, punk meets funk, Mari Slack is all about music. The debut EP from Christchurch based singer is geared up to be an impressive first release. Though this was produced independently, you wouldn’t know it from a casual (or even careful) listen. Listeners will be impressed with the melodic and yet driving guitar work and be caught off guard by the occasional use of experimental chords. Above all, the powerful vocal Mari delivers will send shivers down anyone’s spine.

Though this EP can be classified as pop-rock, it is by no means generic. It took only one week for the first single, ‘Part of You,’ to make it to the top of The Audience (NZ On Air) online daily chart and to hit number three on Kiwi FM’s Monday evening chart. Other radio stations in New Zealand, Australia and Norway are in the process of adding the song to their playlists, and reviews and interviews are being planned in the coming weeks by various local and national media outlets.

Even as a child growing up in Norway, Mari had a unique and insatiable passion for music. Her dreams of pursuing this passion seemed to take the sideline in her teenage years, and after turning 20 it appeared the doors were closed for good. However, before the dream had crumbled completely, the opportunity for her to jump back on the track and chase after her dream had reemerged. She started seriously writing originals while studying music at Vision College, during which time she met guitarist Josiah Dayo. Taking a risk, in 2012 she approached Josiah about starting a band, and since then things have started snowballing.

Now a solid team has gathered around her – Josiah on guitar, Grace McLean on drums, Jordan McLean on guitar and Phil Parkes on bass – all committed to getting Mari and her music to the world. Today the band are contributing ideas, inspiration, arrangements, and even starting to write songs collaboratively. Coincidently, everyone in the band works with youth so naturally the music has a fresh, jubilant vibe infused with a positive and hopeful outlook.

After years of performing other people’s songs, Mari is finally finding her own voice. The EP will be officially released on the 30th of November during the Samstock music festival in Otago. Upon returning to Christchurch the band plans on performing at various venues as part of their local release effort. The EP will be available on CD, iTunes, Spotify, Bandcamp, CD Baby, Amazon, Google Play, Rhapsody, etc.

The Deep Six

The Deep Six is a rock band of Christchurch New Zealand, established in 2011.

Following a counselling session, drummer Hurb Gill drove to his nearest friend (Shane Suede) with the intention of forming a band. Shane gave Hurb the details of guitarist Ryan Franicevic. By chance Ryan met bass player Koko Lassi a few days later. Hurb was given the details of Auckland guitarist Scott Daley who had recently moved to Christchurch. The quartet jammed for the first time in September of 2011. They tried a few vocalists until Ben Brootal completed the line up. The group performed under the name Lockjaw from May 2012 until June 2013. Shane Suede replaced Franicevic as guitarist and the name Lockjaw was later retired for a number of personal and professional reasons. The Deep Six made their first live appearance on January 3rd 2014.

The band describe their music as “A tension or clash resulting from the combination of two or more disharmonious or unsuitable elements.” This is the definition of ‘dissonance’ taken from a dictionary found in their old rehearsal space. This description is most apparent on the song ‘Dissonance H’ The Deep Six live show is something to behold. The band typically spend the day after tending to their injuries.

Catch the Deep six at the following dates:

Fri 17th Jan, Club Paradox, Nelson w/ Bathawk
Fri 28th of Feb, Churchills Tavern, w/ Pieces Of Molly.

I Am You are 3 members from Timaru and one from Christchurch, A chance meeting in Christchurch brought together three musicians. With drums, guitar and bass the final ingredient was added upon the return of a friend from Australia. Armed with his unique and energetic stage presence I Am You are ready to be released upon an unsuspecting public.Although it is common knowledge amongst the city’s live music loving population, it does need to be said that Christchurch’s live music scene is sadly not what it used to be.

The days of being able to wander into any venue, at any time of the evening and see a fantastic band, making unique music, seem to be on hiatus, and those bands making original tunes are pushed into obscure locations a very expensive taxi ride away.

This was true for my first encounter of ‘I Am You’. I’d heard of them, but I hadn’t heard them (that old chestnut). I’d seen their posters around town, (which if you’re a fan of psychedelics are well worth a geez) and knew the bands they played with.

When I finally did get the chance to see them, however, I was in complete awe.

They played to a room of five people as if it were packed full of thousands, not a single fraction of their energy turned down, not a single member seeming to give a toss that their only onlookers were a couple of half pissed, hairy midgets. But the sound was the real deal As if ‘Led Zeppelin’ and ‘The Doors’ were hanging out listening to ‘King Crimson’ records, waiting for ‘Black Sabbath’ to arrive.

Since then I’ve managed to see ‘I Am You’ play many more times, most recently with another amazing Christchurch band – ‘The Laon’ (Check them out NOW) while raising funds to compete in the battle of the bands finals in Auckland, but have since taken a break to work on their debut self-titled E.P.

Recorded at The Death Mill, Timaru by Ben ‘Dip’ Smith, with artwork by Anthony ‘Mouse‘ Light and featuring Steven Gill (Guitar), Matt Woodall (Vocals), Ashley Perry (Drums) and Chris Kerr (Bass) it’s about time the public got a taste of the bands groove-rock, and is sure to make an impact on the local scene and the public alike.

The ‘I Am You‘ E.P Can be purchased digitally from iamyourock.bandcamp.com and from the bands’ live shows.

Tracks include;
- ‘Tell me no lies’,
- ‘What I is’,
- ‘Truth between lies’,
- ‘Double Slit’ and
- ‘Fail to prevail’.

Up and coming Christchurch artist Laura Hunter, now based in Auckland, released her highly anticipated EP ‘Quiet Underwater’ on the 21st of June 2013, after an organic process of developing, collaborating and performing with Producer/Musician, Lukas Kelly.

‘Quiet Underwater’ reviewed by NZ Musician Magazine as ‘Stunning Electro Pop with total heart’. Electro Pop at times meets drum and bass, held together by rhythmic acoustic guitar, emotive lyrics and a fresh captivating new voice.

Laura’s success shone through in 2013 on The Audience, where her two singles, featured on the EP, 'Don't Be Afraid to Love' and 'Driving in a Straight Line' both remained at number one of the released charts & ‘Driving in a Straight Line’ secured a place on ‘The Best of the Audience Year One’ Spotify playlist.

Driving in a Straight line’ went on to receive music video funding by New Zealand On Air, and the music video was officially released on Friday 31st of January 2014. It reflects a stunning artistic concept, developed by director Guy Tichborne, which met the exact vision Laura had for the single. The video eloquently gives life to Laura’s sound, produced by Lukas Kelly. EMAIL US for a free download of 'Driving in a Straight Line'

In 2013 Laura played various shows including the support act for Six60’s Christchurch gig at the Bedford, various other Christchurch venues, and a show with Tali in Dunedin. Taipei Teahouse n. 1 a place where political allegiances and social rank were said to have been temporarily suspended in favour of honest and rational discourse. 2. Indie-tronica duo from Christchurch, New Zealand

Billy Mills and Kerry Coulshed a.k.a taipei teahouse, formed in 2013. Based in Christchurch, New Zealand, they make music using Ableton Live software combining midi instruments with live vocals, keys, bass and guitar. Billy is a full time student and front man of Christchurch rock band Imaginary Blues Machine. Kerry is a student at CPIT jazz school and part time educator.

Themes? Often inspired by literary or political influences and also, life. Tracks from their debut EP cover topics of multinational greed, psychological entrapment and oppression of women under the Taliban regime…..there’s an honest love song in there too though! They are currently collaborating with a film maker in Afghanistan in the making of a music video for their track “Beautiful Beast”. It’s a unique creative project between the two countries and particularly topical in the current political climate.

Musical influences? Combined, they are influenced by almost all genres from punk to pop. “We have well defined roles in this. I write the lyrics and come with the initial melody and a few harmony ideas. I always have a sense of the emotion I want the song to portray but am open for it to evolve as our ideas merge. Billy adds his musicianship and production expertise and songs usually change and evolve quickly once we have a solid idea. Sometimes there is a lot of discussion and sometimes there is none. We’ve just found a way to work together and combine our different strengths. It’s easy, most of the time….Billy might not agree though!”

Their debut EP is due for release on the first day of New Zealand Music month 2014: Thursday May 1st and is available from Bandcamp and iTunes"We're 'releasing' our debut EP.....a selection of tracks we worked on in 2013 that need to be let loose to glide among the airwaves.... and make room for more writing. We very much hope you enjoy them!" Any money raised will go directly to the “Beautiful Beast Project”

Take a trip to an elevated and dark New Zealand Trip-hop land, where the mood is sexual and the sounds are wet. The tracks by Doprah are purely prickly and make us all hot and bothered beneath the waistline. The Primal bass lines contradict gently the soft and celestial melody to create a vibe filled with intent. The contrast leads to a wide and resonating sound that is only made better with Indi Force‘s vocals. Very very dope. A must listen, malevolently dulcet.

"We’re lost, but we’re safe. We’re doomed, but we know it. And there’s a strange peace to be found in this wasteland." - Yours Truly

"Beautifully understated compositions rooted in Radiohead’s family of theremin synths and the weaving texture of male and female vocals." - Pigeons and Planes

"Falling in love with Christchurch duo DOPRAH was a little bit like jumping into the ocean with bricks attached to my ankles (in the best possible way)" - Purple Sneakers

"Perfectly moody. Driven by that visceral chain-gang beat, and set against that Radiohead-esque baseline, you can’t help but be hypnotized" - Portals

"Like the roots of a tree that twist, turn and go everywhere they please, the psychedelic drug tripping sounds of Doprah on “San Pedro” not only go in the ground but they also root up and out into an ethereal haze of drug induced sonic waves" - Hilly Dilly

Libeau's debut album 'Led By The Moon' was forged during many late nights recording on her laptop in Christchurch, New Zealand, formulating a mixture of deep atmospherics blended with soulful vocals and harmonies with dark angular beats.

These songs drew the attention, through a mutual friend, of UK record producer Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers, Super Furry Animals, Codes).

He came over to work with Libeau at Christchurch's newly opened Quicksand studios, where he decided, rather than record the album from scratch, to use Libeau's home recordings as the basis of the album due to their magical quality and innocence.

Having recently seen the work of British guitarist Andy T. with Portishead's Adrian Utley  accompanying the 1922 silent film 'Nosferatu' at Bristol's Gothic Cathedral, felt he would be a perfect fit to complete the ensemble.

After an intensive month of recording, the album resumed in the UK with contributions from the Vulcan String Quartet, renowned for their work with the Manic Street Preachers and Bill Fay. The album was mixed by Havers long term associate Clint Murphy who brought out the albums rhythmic side, expanding on the Quicksand recordings with additional beats and sonorous bass.

With mixing completed , the recordings were mastered by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound in New York, completing the albums global journey.

Libeau's debut album 'Led By The Moon' will be released on Friday 20th June on iTunes and Bandcamp

Catch Libeau live at Auckland's Wine Cellar on Friday 27 June.

NO BROADCAST, formerly Anthesiac, move post rock, alt rock, punk and noise into a bracing powerhouse of sound which is surpassed only by experiencing then live and in the flesh.

Established in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2007, these three chaps have formed a strong musical chemistry that is increasingly unique in bands today. Priding themselves on their ability to instinctively move their music where it wants to go, the group are a volatile live act audiences can't take their eyes off.

NO BROADCAST have gigged extensively over the past 5 years, playing various festivals and shows in Christchurch and Dunedin with a variety of local artists. They have played alongside sludge rockers Beastwars, Post Punk heavyweights Die!Die!Die! as well as supporting Mountaineater (former HDU members) and internationally renounced six-piece An Emerald City on the South Island leg of their 2011 New Zealand tour.

Amongst the many gigs, the band released their debut E.P Null and Void in the Spring of 2011. The release was well received in the press and garnered glowing reviews as well as airplay on nationwide radio. The E.P was recorded by singer/guitarist Josh in his garage before being sent to be mixed and mastered by Dunedin’s infamous Dale Cotton. The CD sleeves for the E.P were all handmade and printed by the band themselves giving the overall package a handcrafted, DIY appeal.

In 2012 the band began work on a body of work which would later become their self-titled and full length. For the new material the band decided to change the name to No Broadcast, a title of a piece from the last record. 2013 the band kept behind the scenes but the name did make it overseas as guitars/vocalist Josh Braden went over to the UK to try and get the music heard though playing a number of shows in London and Bristol. Also a bunch of b side recordings were released online under the title 1736.

“Some acts take upwards of half a dozen releases to get this degree of cohesiveness in their music. Anthesiac appear to have circumvented the system and started at the top of their game. Null And Void is an excellent document of one of our country’s brightest upcoming acts still in their early years.” - By Ricardo Kerr

No Broadcast have just released their self titled debut album and are going on tour to promote it across NZ.

Shaun McTague (Vocals//Guitar), Cameron Hoy (Guitar), Edward Kwon (Bass), and Richard Kwon (Drums) have been jamming together under various guises since meeting at Shirley Boys High School in 2008, before becoming Villain in 2010 after discovering a mutual love for postpunk and alternative rock music.

The quartet play regularly around Christchurch and have recently released a single, titled 'PostHuman', in support for their debut self titled album.

The album was recorded and mixed by Matthew Gunn, and was released on the 3rd of October 2014 accompanied by a triumphant release show at the bands favourite venue, the darkroom.

Villain's sound is characterized by scrangly, effects-laden, and atmospheric guitars, a deep and driving rhythm section, and anthemic vocal lines, characterized by McTague's baritone voice.

Villain draw their inspiration from an eclectic range of influences, including but not limited to; classic postpunk, postpunk revival, shoe gaze, noise rock, newwave, darkwave, hiphop, electronica and doom metal.

Blindfolded And Led To The Woods

Combining elements of death metal, grindcore and mathcore, Christchurch based BLINDFOLDED AND LED TO THE WOODS have been tearing up stages across New Zealand with their frenetic live shows for the last four years.

After forming in early 2010, the band quickly rose to internet fame after appearing on a TV show performing slam death metal in front of kids. Shortly after in January 2011, the band independently released their first EP “Armed to the Teeth with Jellybeans”. The band spent the rest of the year touring up and down the country promoting the release which culminated in sharing the stage with Psycroptic in October 2011.

Fast forward to 2014, where the band reconvened at STL Audio in Wellington under the microscope of producer Troy Kelly to record their debut album “My Vaseline Diaries”. This album due for release in November 2014 represents the past three years of the bands existence with ten ball-crushing songs packed from start to finish with blistering heavy riffs, insane time signatures and no time to rest.

Lebowski

Lebowski is a five piece metal band with heavy Hardcore style elements formed late 2011 by drummer Guy ‘Higgy’ Higginson & Jonno ‘Juanos’ Wheeler. Lebowski then recruited vocalist Owen Lipski & bassist Layton Puru.

The personal style and influences of the individual members fuse together in layers, combining to create an aggressive, groove filled hardcore sound. Rather than adhere to any one predefined sub-genre within metal, Lebowski use whatever they feel is needed to lead any one track in the general direction of the end.

Within a year of forming Lebowski acquired a second guitarist Andy Wilkinson, and the band polished their songs to recording standard to begin their album. Final tracking was done a year later and after sending everything to get mixed & mastered in the USA, the album is finally finished and ready for release on December 5th with an album tour expected early 2015.

Lebowski has performed with a number of local and international bands including;  Volumes (US), Stray From The Path (US), The Acacia Strain (US), 8 Foot Sativa, Tainted, Depths and  Blindfolded And Led To The Woods.

Li'l Chuck The One Man Skiffle Machine

$
0
0

skiffle:ˈskɪf(ə)l : a style of 1920s and 1930s jazz deriving from blues, ragtime, and folk music, using both improvised and conventional instruments.

Creativity Without Compromise: Li'l Chuck The One Man Skiffle Machine is an authentic one man band performing “good time music with old time style”.  Blessed with the ability to handle multiple instruments at a time, Li’l Chuck is the master of coordination: blowin', suckin' and pluckin' simultaneously.

Having spent a lifetime rummaging through the drawers of 1930s, 40s and 50s music, his songs are inspired by the sounds of Blues, Early Jazz, Western Swing and Ragtime. Drawing on the innocence, simplicity and quirkiness of these old time music styles, Li’l Chuck doffs his hat to those that have gone before with his new album Blues In Full Swing.

Centered around the harmonica, resonator guitar and vocals, and perfectly balanced with kick drum, hi hat and kazoo – all at the same time – Blues In Full Swing is all about giving the audience a rollicking good time in the style of street performers from the glory days.

Lighthearted and full of foot tapping good times ,this is the album for those with a love for the quirky and eclectic; and most importantly for those with a love for old-time harmonica.

The Album: While the impetus for this latest venture from talented musician David Thorpe has been building over the last two decades, the Canterbury Earthquakes and raising a young family have been important components in finally bringing this album to life. “The last few years have proven to many that you have to seize the moment, time waits for no-one,” he shares.“Being a one-man band had been in my head too long and I had to start getting it down. If for nothing else than as a personal archive and love letter to my family.”

While quick to claim his latest release isn’t a personal photograph album there is no disguising the personal tragedies, tales and love that play out in his 12 original tracks. The single cover on the album offers a fitting tribute to the song that started it all, Jesse Fuller's SanFrancisco Bay Blues.

Recorded by John Gardener at Peel Productions, mixed by Johnny Pipe and mastered by Ben Delaney, each song illustrates the essence of a one man band, with all of the instruments played and recorded simultaneously. “I wanted the sound to represent exactly what you would hear if I were playing in your living room,” continues David.“I can turn up at any place and play. Just like the street musicians of old.”

The Musician: While his current persona, Li’l Chuck, might be new, the man behind the mask is a seasoned muso with over twenty years of experience, including eleven years with Christchurch’s infamous Black Velvet Band, solo performances as Davey Backyard and numerous other collaborations, dating back to his childhood in the UK. However with a love of music from the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s, this is him at his best.

“My mind is like a firework display at the best of times,” laughs David.“I am always juggling projects and life in general. Blessed with the ability to perform by coordinating multiple instruments at one time I am proof that men can indeed multitask!”

The Easy Hearts have been writing music and performing together in Christchurch NZ, for a little over four years now. Collectively they have been a part of the New Zealand music industry for quite some time with their members having played in other notable bands The Valves, Pumpkin head, and 7 Tongues.

Last year the band hit the recording studio and started work on their debut record. Their first single “One More Time” gained airtime on The Rock and Radio Hauraki in New Zealand. This track has also received some international attention in Japan and the U.S.A. through syndicated radio show Passport Approved and featured in the top ten rock category of the ISRC Unsigned International Songwriters competition.http://www.songwritingcompetition.com/

The Easy Hearts latest single "The Enemy" is an angst driven pop rock anthem all about conquering personal demons and overcoming adversity. The song was recorded at Quicksand Studios in Christchurch and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Metallica)in Los Angeles.

The Easy Hearts are fast building a great reputation for their entertaining and energetic live shows, and the band have spent the past 4 years playing venues of all shapes and sizes up and down the country. From unplugged and ambient to loud, full throttle rock n roll, they can adapt to any environment and just love to play live.

"Rolling waves of fibrous sonic matter you can sink your teeth into."

Tim Hunt and Braden Southee left no stone unturned when it came to magnetizing their accumulative sound. A few chest hairs and musical growth later, Ben McGillivray was summoned to take care of battery whilst Hunt's older sibling David was employed for baritone string duty. As a harmonious quadrilateral, writing could begin.

Tim's vocal range could be likened to all of the great rock n roll legends. Masculine and soothing are words not mutually exclusive in Stonehurst's contextual delivery. The guitar work is Sabbath-esqe with balls to wall classic solo work, whilst bass guitar compliments the writing style as well as being an integral part of the backbone of this 'no holds barred' hit factory. Ben's limbs were a gift
from the rock gods as his style could be described as John Bonham meets Bill Ward.

Stonehurst’s main focus now is on growing in all areas as a band with independent management, including signwriting, recording, and touring. The bands upcoming single ‘Can’t Get Away’ is the first single track featuring from Stonehurst’s much anticipated second album titled ‘A Strange Urge’, released 29th of May 2015 along with a national NZ single release tour.

Stonehurst have shared the stage all over New Zealand with the likes of International bands Corrosion of Conformity (U.S), Avil (U.S), Paul Dianno (Original Iron Maiden vocalist, U.K)
Lord (A.U), Looking Glass (A.U), 10 Thousand (A.U).
